Microsoft has announced that it will officially retire Skype in May 2025 as part of its strategy to streamline consumer communication services and enhance adaptability to customer needs. The company will shift its focus to Microsoft Teams (free), its modern communication and collaboration platform.
Transition to Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams offers many of the core features that Skype users are familiar with, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. In addition, Teams provides enhanced functionalities such as meeting hosting, calendar management, and community-building capabilities—all available at no cost.
With millions already using Teams for work, school, and personal connections, Microsoft has observed a fourfold increase in the time spent in meetings by consumer users over the past two years. This growth underscores the platform’s value in everyday communication and collaboration.
What This Means for Skype Users
During this transition, Skype users have two options:
- Move to Microsoft Teams for free
- Microsoft will soon enable Skype users to sign into Teams using their Skype credentials. This rollout begins with members of the Teams and Skype Insider programs.
- Upon logging in, users’ existing Skype chats and contacts will automatically transfer to Teams, ensuring a seamless transition.
- During this period, Skype and Teams users will be able to call and message each other, ensuring continued connectivity.
- Export Skype Data
- Users who choose not to migrate to Teams can export their Skype data, including chat history, contacts, and call logs.
- Skype will remain available until May 5, 2025, giving users time to explore their options.Â
Getting Started with Teams
Switching to Teams is a straightforward process and does not prevent users from continuing to use Skype during the transition. To get started:
- Download Teams from the official Microsoft website.
- Log in using Skype credentials.
- Access all Skype chats and contacts within Teams.
Microsoft has also provided a step-by-step guide to assist users in making the most of Teams’ features.
Changes to Skype’s Paid Services
Microsoft is discontinuing paid Skype services for new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions for domestic and international calls. However, existing subscription users can continue using their credits and plans until the end of their next renewal period.
After May 5, 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will still be available for remaining paid users via the Skype web portal and within Teams.
A Farewell to Skype
Since its launch, Skype has played a significant role in modern digital communication, connecting millions of people worldwide. Microsoft acknowledges the impact of this transition and reassures users that it remains committed to supporting them through the change. As Microsoft embraces the future with Teams, it aims to offer users a more integrated, feature-rich, and seamless communication experience.
