Migration path

From NAV to Business Central Cloud

Every NAV migration follows a proven 4-stage path. Microsoft requires an intermediate on-premises upgrade before moving to the cloud.

1

Dynamics NAV

Your starting point

  • NAV 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018
  • C/AL codebase
  • On-premises SQL Server
  • Custom modifications in base code
2

Business Central 14

Required intermediate step

  • Upgrade to BC14 platform
  • Convert C/AL to AL extensions
  • Replace base code mods with apps
  • 70–85% auto-converted by toolkit
3

BC 25+ On-Prem

Cloud-ready version

  • Upgrade to latest on-prem release
  • Validate all AL extensions
  • Run cloud migration tool
  • SQL Server 2016+ required
4

BC Cloud

Your destination

  • Test deployment in sandboxes
  • Migrate data with Microsoft tool
  • Set cut-off date & switch over
  • Automatic updates, Copilot, AppSource

We handle all four stages as a single project — you only experience one go-live. Typical timeline: 4–12 weeks depending on data volume and customizations.

Why migrate now

There has never been a better time

Support is ending, costs are rising, and the cloud has never been more capable.

Eliminate infrastructure

No more SQL Server licensing, Windows Server patching, backup management, or upgrade projects. Microsoft runs everything on Azure with a 99.9% SLA. You just use the software.

Unlock cloud-only features

AI Copilot, autonomous agents, Teams integration, Power Automate, Shopify connector, sandbox environments, and auto-deployed Power BI reports — none of these work on-premises.

Stay compliant and supported

Once extended support ends, you receive no security fixes, no regulatory updates, and no hotfixes. Business Central cloud updates automatically — you are always current, always compliant.

Save on BTC3 promo

Microsoft’s Bridge to Cloud 3 promotion gives qualifying customers 30% off cloud licenses for 3 years. This window closes December 2027 — the sooner you start, the more you save.

What you gain

Features you unlock by moving to the cloud

These features are either completely unavailable on-premises or require significant additional effort, infrastructure, and licensing.

Not available on-premises

  • AI Copilot and autonomous agents (payables, sales orders)
  • In-product search across all pages and data
  • Late payment prediction (Azure AI)
  • Manage work across multiple companies from one screen
  • Default Power BI reports (auto-deployed)
  • Sandbox environments (3 included per production)
  • Create workflows from Power Automate
  • 3 free external accountant licenses
  • Internal administrators don’t need a paid license
  • Share to Microsoft Teams
  • Business Central app for Microsoft Teams
  • Bulk invoicing from Microsoft Bookings
  • Connect to Shopify (native integration)

Requires additional effort on-prem

  • Server infrastructure maintenance (SQL, IIS, Windows Server)
  • Financial reports in Excel (limited without Entra ID)
  • Read/write data with Excel (OData only, no add-in)
  • Integration with Microsoft Word for cover sheets
  • Built-in Power BI reports (manual setup required)
  • Built-in Power Automate (separate config needed)
  • Built-in web services (manual publishing)
  • Outlook add-in (requires Entra ID setup)
  • Standard REST API (limited, no Microsoft Graph)
  • Sales and inventory forecast (needs Azure ML)
  • Intelligence in cash flow forecast (needs Azure AI)
  • Segregation of data for external consultants

Your licensing path

What are your options?

Your migration path depends on your current license type. Find yours below.

Promo available

Perpetual license (bought before Sept 2024)

You may qualify for Microsoft’s Bridge to Cloud 3 (BTC3)promotion: 30% discount on Dynamics 365 cloud licenses for a 3-year term. You get dual access rights — keep running on-premises while migrating at your own pace. Requires an active Enhancement Plan and enrollment through a CSP partner (that’s us). Runs until December 31, 2027.

Already entitled

Monthly subscription (NAV or BC on-premises)

If you have an active monthly subscription for Dynamics NAV or Business Central on-premises, you are already entitled to the latest version. No new licenses needed. You just need a migration project and a partner transfer. Contact us for a migration quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Is Dynamics NAV still supported by Microsoft?

It depends on your version. NAV 2016 extended support ends April 2026, NAV 2017 in January 2027, and NAV 2018 in January 2028. Older versions are already out of support entirely. Business Central cloud is the strategic, long-term path.

What is the Bridge to Cloud (BTC3) promotion?

If you hold a perpetual Dynamics NAV or BC on-premises license purchased before September 1, 2024, you may qualify for Microsoft's Bridge to Cloud 3 promotion — a 30% discount on Dynamics 365 cloud licenses for three years. You also get dual access rights: keep running on-premises while migrating to SaaS.

Will we lose our NAV customizations when migrating?

No. We analyze your existing customizations and re-implement the ones you still need as standard AL extensions or AppSource apps. Many legacy customizations can be replaced by standard BC features, reducing complexity.

How long does a Navision migration take?

A typical NAV-to-BC migration takes 4–12 weeks depending on data volume, number of customizations, and integrations. Simple migrations with clean data can be faster; complex multi-company setups take longer.

What happens to our historical data?

We migrate your full transaction history — general ledger entries, customer/vendor ledgers, item entries, and posted documents. Your reporting continuity is preserved from day one on Business Central.

How much does a NAV migration cost compared to staying on NAV?

Staying on NAV means ongoing server costs, manual upgrades, and no access to AI features. Migration to BC cloud eliminates infrastructure costs (typically 14% lower TCO) and gives you automatic updates, Copilot, and AppSource apps.

I have a monthly subscription for NAV or BC on-prem. Do I need new licenses?

No. If you have an active monthly subscription for Dynamics NAV or Business Central on-premises, you are already entitled to the latest version. You just need a migration project and a partner transfer. Contact us for a quote.

Can I migrate directly from Dynamics NAV to Business Central online?

Not in one step. Microsoft requires an intermediate upgrade to Business Central on-premises (v14) first, then migration to Business Central online. We handle both phases as a single project — you only experience one go-live.

Will Business Central be more expensive than Dynamics NAV?

Business Central is a cloud subscription, so you eliminate server hardware, maintenance, upgrade, and replacement costs. In most cases, total cost of ownership is lower than NAV. Microsoft provides a TCO calculator to compare your specific scenario.

Can I still customize Business Central like I did with NAV?

Yes, but differently. Business Central uses an extensions model (AL language) instead of direct code modification. Customizations are built as apps that install on top of standard code. This means automatic updates from Microsoft no longer break your modifications.

Can I buy Business Central directly from Microsoft?

No. Business Central is sold exclusively through Microsoft partners in the CSP program. As your partner, we handle licensing, provisioning, and billing — and we pass Microsoft's list pricing (MRLP) directly to you.

Where is my data stored in Business Central cloud?

Your data is stored in Microsoft Azure data centers in the same country or nearest geographic region. For Luxembourg customers, data resides in EU data centers. Microsoft guarantees 99.9% SLA, invests over $1B/year in cloud security, and employs 3,500+ security experts.

Are NAV customers required to migrate to Business Central?

No, it's not mandatory — but it's strongly recommended. Microsoft will end extended support for the last NAV version (2018) in January 2028. After that, no security patches, regulatory updates, or hotfixes. Business Central cloud is the only path forward with continuous updates and AI features.
